What lucky Irish soldiers! Kate Middleton wears green while handing out shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day
While many of the 30-and-under set are eager to keep debaucherous St. Patrick’s Day traditions alive, Kate Middleton celebrated the day with a 111-year-old royal custom: handing out shamrocks to the Irish guard. Wearing a dark green coatdress by Emilia Wickstead, a brown hat by Lock and Co., and a shamrock brooch that both the Queen Mother and Princess Anne have worn on St. Patrick’s Days past, Kate greeted soldiers as well as a huge Irish wolfhound—the regiment’s mascot. We can only assume they all felt extra lucky to have Kate there! You may also recognize the soldiers’ uniforms: Prince William was made an honorary colonel of the regiment and wore this uniform to the royal wedding. And one last St. Patrick’s Day royal factoid: this was Kate’s first solo military engagement.
