When did Toronto get so cool?

Toronto has always been cool, just took other people a little longer to realize this.
Fashion Crimes was recently featured in the Miami Herald newspaper, the article was titled "When did Canada get so cool?".

The article hails Toronto as the hot 'go to' city in Canada, with awesome nightlife, unique and trendy shopping , amazing restaurants and other little treasures. It talks about the wonders on Kensington, marvels at the history of the Horse Shoe Tavern and all the amazing worldly eats the area of Queen St West has to offer.

Fashion Crimes relies on word of mouth to spread the story of our store. We do get quite a few international customers and people from all across Canada who have heard from a sister, cousin, friend all about Fashion Crimes.

Keep on passing the good word and check out the article from the Miami Herald Here.

G20 Fashions! Make protesting trendy!

When Toronto Star reporter Katie Daubs called and pitched the idea of doing a story on fashion for protesters during the upcoming G20 Summit, that has taken over Toronto, we jumped. Head Stylist and Manager Kat McEwen got right to buzzing around the store pulling looks, some that would not absorb tear gas or blend into hotel wallpapers and others that gave off a peaceful hippy vibe.

Featured in today's Toronto Star, favorite Fashion Crimes Model, Jasmine Foster strutted her stuff and just happened to come in wearing her hunter rain boots, perfect footwear for these G20 Fashions!
The cire tied-up dress is similar to PVC, but is more form-fitting, "to cut through the crowds," And Hey! the jewelry, embellished with designs of barbed wire and chains, could double as a projectile in a pinch.
This white PVC dress doesn't go well with a gas mask, so you wouldn't want to cause any trouble, But in case trouble finds you, the PVC material provides pretty decent protection for tear gas.

An optional bandana is made with polyester to protect from noxious fumes, but it also pampers the protestor with the luxury of satin. The Sailor Girl dress gives off that militant vibe, but says come and get me in a much different way!
This Boho dress with wooden accessories gives off that peaceful hippy vibe.

Parlour Salon celebrates being a year old!

One of our favorite Salon's in Toronto is celebrating it's first birthday!!
Parlour Salon is located at 6 Ossington, just North of Queen. The lovely hair artists, Brionie and Suzzi, were responsible for the hair and makeup at our Retrospective Party held at the Drake Hotel in April, for LG Fashion Week.

Parlour is getting a lot of excitement these days, what with many interviews in the paper and on TV, and even a guest appearance from Adam Lambert! What better way to commemorate one year of good hair, than with a good party!

There will be drinks, laughs, photos taken, and an all around great time!

Come hang with the FC crew and see why Parlour Salon is our favorite.

Amber Ellert Rocks FC!

Amber Ellert is an up and coming hot new drag queen in the toronto. In fact Heroin Marks has named her the queen to watch out for. Amber Ellert is not your typical drag queen, often opting for edgier more rock based songs or a full on theatrical numbers, like the time she came out in a hospital gown and bandages.

Amber is a long time friend of the Fashion Crimes family, Amber actually lives with Carly and Frankie. Being so lucky to live with two Fashion Crimes girls has its advantages, especially when you all fit the same dress size. Recently Frankie purchases a Jezebel Wiggle with tulle in bright yellow and before she had a chance to wear it Amber Ellert was rocking it on stage and Crews and Tangos this past monday, check out the pictures & videos of Amber Ellert rocking full head to hose Fashion Crimes (belt, dress, gloves, hose, ect all from fc).

Add Amber as a friend on facebook and watch out for up coming shows!

Check us out in Canadian Living This Month!

We just got our June Issues of Canadian Living, Elle Magazine and Anokhi and there are some fabulous Fashion Crimes finds!
Shout out to Julia McEwen, long time friend and family of Fashion Crimes, she is the Fashion & Beauty Editor at Canadian Living.
The Famed Oscar dress is Fuchsia

` Audrey Holly in Impressionist Silk :Yellow.

All the props from this shoot belong to a friend of Julia's, these photos were actually taken inside his house. He is in party management so a room full of chandelier's is no big deal.

One of our dresses was also featured in an ad found in Elle Canada for the new Sex and the City 2 Movie. I know we are all really excited to see it. Probably will get gussied up in our best cocktail dresses for drinks first then go catch the movie with some girlfriends.

And Lastly, one of our bridal headpieces in this months issue of Anokhin Magazine.

Halloween Costumes - Week one!

Halloween at Fashion Crimes isn’t your regular Halloween.

Here we take it very seriously, so serious in fact- that we dress up for almost an entire month! Our staff are also having a costume-off and at the end of the month and we will be featuring a winner, so please comment with your favorite picks of the week!

This weekend past (October 11 & 12) was our first weekend of crazy costumes and Halloween excitement that can be found within the abundant inventory. We saw Nuns, Flappers, a lost member of the Jonas Brothers stopped by, as well as the Spice Girls in full girl power force!

Saturday : (L-R) Carly as a glamorous Pirate complete with a Cardinal in place of a parrot, Sister Carrie looking very authentic, Kat as a flight attendant from “Kitten Airways”, Logan as the 4th member of the Jonas Brothers (complete with a purity ring!), Katrina - the not so French, French maid, Kanchana as a fun flapper straight from the dirty 30’s, and Robyn as a fierce kitten.

The Spice Girls on Sunday called for an appropriate soundtrack adjustment.

Cutaneous Care with Carly

BEAUTIFUL DRESS, PERFECT SHOES, CUTE DATE; NOW WHAT....?!

What about your skin? This column will entail a few basic things every girl should know about skin care and how to keep it glowing!

First thing is first, keep your germy hands away from your beautiful face! No really! Think about how many different surfaces you touch daily compared to how often you thoroughly wash your hands.

Now that we got that reality check out of the way, time to get down to business.
Let’s talk sebum glands (Sebaceous glands) they are microscopic glands in the skin which secrete an oily matter (sebum), in the hair follicles, to lubricate the skin and hair of animals. In humans, they are found in their greatest abundance on the face and scalp, though they are distributed throughout all skin sites, excluding the palms and soles, of your hands and feet respectively. Basically, these glands produce your natural skin oils. Sometimes you have oily skin and its because these glands are over producing the oils. In that case you need to suppress the glands so they don’t produce as much oil.

Ways to mange oily skin include; using a cleanser with bacteria fighting oils but also ingredients that absorb excess oil. Ingredients such as charcoal & liquorish root mattify the skin. These can be found in Lush Cosmetics Coal Face Soap ($10.95 per 100 grams). Another important ingredient is Tea Tree oil, which acts as a natural antibacterial/antiseptic formula to disinfect from the bacteria that can be caused by over active oil production. A few products with tea tree oil to keep your skin and even oiler body looking good are Lush Cosmetics Fresh Farmacy ($9.95 per 100grams) or Body shop’s Foaming Tea Tree Oil face Soap($16.50 per 100ml)
When you have under productive Sebaceous glands your skin is not producing enough of its own natural oils. In this case, you still need to maintain your healthy skin by cleansing regularly and using more gentle ingredients. Ingredients such as lavender, chamomile, and aloe vera are all very soothing to dry skin but will also help to calm down any redness or irritation (also good for sunburned skin!). Even seaweed is another good ingredient that promotes moisture in the skin. Try a Paradise Regained Moisturizer from Lush Cosmetics ($45.95 per 45gram pot) rich with Vitamin E, Green Tea and Jojoba oil! (That is my moisturizer! I Love it!) Or Body Shop’s Vitamin E Line; Vitamin E can be found in essential oils such as lavender and almond oils which promotes elasticity in the skin.

Now that we recognize our type of sebum glands we must understand them. Despite having oily or dry skin we still need a good moisturizer!
When you have overactive sebum glands, to put it simply, you need to tell them to calm down. When we sleep our body relaxes and that is when most of our natural oils are produced. In order to have them calm down you actually need to use a heavier moisturizer at night. Using this heavier moisturizer encourages your sebum glands to not need to work as hard, through continuing this pattern it should over time help to suppress your sebum glands and cause your skin to become more ‘normal’.
Just the opposite is necessary to speed up your sebum glands in dry skin. By using a light moisturizer at night, or none at all, will wake up your lazy glands and let them know they need to start producing.

One last little tip about these glands, they do not exist around your eyes or on your neck which is why the effects of ageing appear there first causing you to use a eye and neck cream. Try finding one with JOBJA Oil this is a natural oil that is almost identical in texture to your sebum oils. This will help to prevent or prolong the effects of aging around the eyes and sagging of the neck.
These are just a few simple things to help you understand your skin. They are some of the most important things that can help you in the future to maintaining the youthfulness of your skin.
